Cesar Pita
Raíces en Arcilla (Roots in Clay)
November 8 - December 28, 2024
Opening Reception Friday, November 8, 6-9pm
Elephant Gallery is pleased to announce Raices en Arcilla (Roots in Clay), the first solo gallery exhibition of Nashville sculptor Cesar Pita.
Pita’s work focuses on the experiences of first-generation Latino children in the U.S., exploring the challenges they face and the resilience they embody. These kids mature quickly and carry responsibilities beyond their years as they help their families navigate unfamiliar terrain, including the scrutiny and racism they face for circumstances outside of their control.
The title of this show has two meanings. First, this is the story of Pita’s roots - he is the child of immigrant parents - told through his chosen medium. Second, Pita’s own family history is centered in clay. His grandfather, with help from Pita’s father and uncle, was an adobe brick-maker in Zapotiltic, a small town in the Mexican state of Jalisco. Cesar learned this only after beginning a career as an autobiographical ceramicist.
